Jaypee Sports City, Uttar Pradesh, India

Jaypee Sports City is a new city for 1 million residents in Uttar Pradesh, roughly 3.5 miles south of Delhi. Commissioned by Jaiprakash Gaur and the Jaypee Group, EllisCities led the masterplanning of the entire city, including infrastructure, open space, water and energy systems. Services also included architectural design for key commercial & residential districts, and the writing of climate-oriented design guidelines.

Jaypee Sports City had ambitious sustainability goals, motivated by the tension between India’s growing need for urban development and its rapidly advancing environmental challenges. EllisCities approach with Jaypee was to design the city as a living, breathing organism that harvests and recycles its resources. By aligning the city’s infrastructural systems with its landscape, climate and natural systems, we were able to create a poetic, green and livable city plan that achieves 50% savings in water and energy.

  • 50% Water savings: The Boulevard “Spine of the City” + Stormwater Grid capture the Monsoon rains

  • 20% Energy savings: Waste-to-Energy using Sewage + Stormwater Geothermal

  • 30% Additional Energy savings: Through Design Guidelines, Masterplan Strategies & New Regional Energy Code

“The great lesson of our project in India is the unity of all urban systems. The green network is the water supply, is the waste to energy systems, is the pedestrian, cycle and transit systems, is the structure and the beauty of the city.” - Peter Ellis
